My Essay for Study of the United States Institute Programs 2011
I am a young teacher in Balikpapan’s new school, so I have many responsibilities. Such as teach them, educate them to be discipline, has responsibilities, give honor to other people and aware to environment because our school is environmental based school. It is called “Taruna Adiwiyata” that means young generation of nation that care to environment. Based on vision and mission of our school are educate young generation to have skill, awareness ability of high concern to the environment. My responsibility to their parents is making sure that their children will be educated well in our new school. My responsibilities to my school are give honor to school regulation, teach on time and do the best for school. And my responsibility to the environment is taking care them from climate exchange.
In this program I choose National Curriculum Redesign. It is about how to redesign curriculum in my country. I am sure that institution would help me to achieve it. We know that curriculum is very important in education. The curriculum represents the expression of educational ideas in practice. In formal education or schooling, a curriculum is the set of courses, course work, and content offered at a school or university. A curriculum may be partly or entirely determined by an external, authoritative body. In the each state, with the individual establishes the curriculum taught. In Indonesia builds its curriculum with great participation of national academic subject groups selected by the National Department of Education for the example is Forum Subjects Teacher of Science we called it MGMP IPA for science instruction. The curriculum collectively describes the teaching, learning, and assessment materials available for a given course of study.
A Curriculum is promoted as allowing students to revisit a subject matter’s content at the different levels of development of the subject matter being studied. Crucial to the curriculum is the definition of the course objectives that usually are expressed as learning outcomes’ and normally include the program’s assessment strategy. So, a typical curriculum includes communications, numeracy, information technology, and social skills units, with specific, specialized teaching of each.
Many educational institutions are currently trying to balance two opposing forces. On the one hand, some believe students should have a common knowledge foundation, often in the form of a core curriculum; on the other hand, others want students to be able to pursue their own educational interests, often through early specialty in a major, however, other times through the free choice of courses. An essential feature of curriculum design, seen in every college catalog and at every other level of schooling, is the identification of prerequisites for each course. These prerequisites can be satisfied by taking particular courses, and in some cases by examination, or by other means, such as work experience. In general, more advanced courses in any subject require some foundation in basic courses, but some coursework requires study in other departments, as in the sequence of math classes required for a physics major, or the language requirements for students preparing in literature, music, or scientific research. A more detailed curriculum design must deal with prerequisites within a course for each topic taken up. This in turn leads to the problems of course organization and scheduling once the dependencies between topics are known. By attending this program, I want to find the solution of these problems.
From the opinions and experiences of some friends who had studied and lived in the United States would be the best experience ever. We can share ideas, experiences and knowledge with the best people there. I was so lucky to learn a different culture with a culture of Indonesia such as finding new family from the other community and social life.
The USA so far I know have an update on all technology and its institutions. Stay and study in USA that means getting an amazing experience, especially in improving the knowledge and got friends. USA believed in education and knowledge. Active and best in sharing knowledge to other countries in the world, continously in scholarship programs, and education exhibitions in different part of the world. So, I would not hesitate to share the knowledge I’ve got from The United States to the educators in Indonesia, especially Balikpapan city where I come from.
